Ehud Olmert Warns of the End of Israel

Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said failure to negotiate a two-state solution with the Palestinians would spell the end of the State of Israel. He warned of a South African-style struggle which Israel would lose if a Palestinian state was not established. He was returning from the Annapolis conference in the US where he and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas pledged to launch formal peach talks.

Snow Storm

Sounds like a big snow storm is on the way. But I do not like it that they are talking about freezing rain first. If we get freezing rain and then snow on top of it, all the flowers will freeze out. Sometimes the grass even freezes out in place. That is not good. Last I heard they were talking 6 inches of snow as the worst case scenario. That does not sound good at all and on the weekend when everyone wants to go shopping after working all week. Sure hope it goes north and south of us. It has done that in years past.

Cuba to Have National Elections

Cuba announced that it has set January 20, for national elections that are part of the process of determining whether ailing leader, Fidel Castro, continues as president. The ruling, signed by interim leader, Raul Castro, and read on state television, set the date for elections to provincial and national assemblies, voting that is held every five years. There was no explicit mention of Fidel Castro, but the 81 year old leader of the Cuban Revolution must be re-elected to the national parliament before he could repeat as president of the Council of State to remain in full power.

Veterans Memorial

They are working toward putting up a Veterans Memorial in my husband's hometown and his name will be on it. I put in the application a couple of months ago and it will be awhile yet before they are ready to start putting it together. His older brothers should be on it too but they are both dead and there is no one to apply to have their names put on it since you need a copy of your DD214 release from the service in order to qualify. That is really too bad.

Polygamist Sect Leader Sentenced

A judge sentenced a polygamous sect leader Tuesday to five years to life in prison for his role in the arranged marriage of teenage cousins. Suspect in Slaying of Student Arrested

German police on Tuesday arrested a fugitive wanted in the sex slaying of a British college student in Italy. The grandparents were able to travel to both states to spend a week with both of them, hold and cuddle them. I think that is really great. They will hate to come home and leave them again but their little dog is waiting for them here. She will be very glad to see them and then they will be busy preparing for Thanksgiving.

Buritos and Tacos

We went to Taco Tico today and had their Taco Burgers. They are so good and I took home 6 of their buritos because they make great quick lunches. Then we went out to supper in the next town for Mexican and I had a Taco Salad and my husband had three tacos. They have very good fresh food on Wednesday and Thursday nights. We went shopping at Wal-Mart today. I love to shop there as their prices are so good and I believe the quality of their clothing and most everything is very good. I bought a bunch of cereal a lot cheaper than in our little town. My husband got 3 new long sleeve dress shirts for church and the winter wear. Also two turtleneck sweaters too. Our Car

Our car is so dirty, I really need to run it through the car wash but now they say we are going to have spotty showers all day today so might as well forget that. They have a new car/truck wash in town that is so easy to drive in and out and it does a terrific job of cleaning any vehicle. The big doors are for semis and motorhomes. My Brother's Birthday

US to Help Turkey Combat Rebels

President George W. Bush has promised extra help to tackle Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq, following talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Mr. Bush offered to share intelligence with Turkey and declared the PKK rebel organization an enemy of Turkey, a free Iraq and the United States. Turkey has threatened to hit bases used by the PKK (Kurdistan Worker's Party) unless the US and Iraq do more to help.

An investigation into a Europe wide child pronography network has led to 92 arrests across eight countries according to prosecutors. Gas Prices are rising fast here. It is up to $2.999 here but then I haven't been uptown since Wednesday and wouldn't be surprised if it is over $3.00 now. I have alot of errands to run today so I grouped them altogether for the last few days and will go from place to place in such a way to save the most gasoline. American has plenty of oil but the environmentalists won't let them drill for it. I heard the other day that Cuba is drilling at an angle into our oil reserves off shore. We should be using that oil, not them.

New Tires

We got 4 new tires so we are all set for winter. They had over 70,000 miles on them so they were good tires to begin with. They were Firestone and no matter what all the troubles were that Firestone had with their tires, the ones we had on our car were excellent. This time we got some Cooper tires as they are a name brand around here with 80,000 guaranteed mileage for them so they will last a very long time as we don't drive as much as we used to. It's good to have a good tread on your tires in slippery, snowy weather like we have in this area, so we are all prepared.

Babysitting

My neighbor's job closed down and now she is babysitting. I bet she enjoys being at home with her little one year old alot better than getting out in the cold to go to her other job. The Mom's are just now arriving to pick up their little ones. My neighbor is really great with kids so I know they are in good hands.

Goldfinch are Back!

The Goldfinch are back in big flocks. They are covering all 3 of our feeders and it looks like it is the young ones. They have lost most of their beautiful yellow color now and they say that happens in the fall. They all get to look like the females, kind of plain. It mustbe natures way of protecting them in the fall when they go south. It is sure fun to see them all again. The Monarch butterflies are all gone and the hummingbirds and the Goldfinch will leave soon too. Snow flurries have been showing up here and there.

Libyan Islamists Join al-qaeda

A group of Libyan Islamists have joined al-Qaeda according to an audio message on the internet that was attributed to the radical network's second in command. Ayman al-Zawahri supposedly said the Fighting Islamic Group in Libya was becoming part of al-Qaeda. A recorded message called on Islamists to topple North African, as well as, Palestinian leaders. This is a bad group folks, and we are not immune in this country either. We better stay alert. It is scary.

Writers Strike Has Started

The US screenwriters' union has begun its strike which will seriously affect the late night television talk shows. The Writers Guild of America as asked its 12,000 members to stop working and set up picket lines as of yesterday. They intereviwed some of them on television and they want more cash for work which goes on new media such as DVD's or online. Late night shows are expected to be re-runs till this is settled. Last time it lasted 22 weeks I think it was.

Condoleeza Rice Urges Middle East Peace Deal

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said that a two state solution between Israel and the Palestinians is now needed more urgently than ever. She urged Arab states to accept a peaceful and permanent home for Israel. Israel has said there can be no deal for a Palestinian state unless its own security is guaranteed. Ms Rice is in the region to prepare the ground for a planned peace conference in the US later this month, but she is not ready to set a date yet for the conference.

My husband has had both eyes operated on now and today he goes for his last checkup. Then he will be able to order new glasses. Mainly the glasses will be for reading but he has very light sensitive eyes so he will have photogray put in them so that they change color inside and out to protect his eyes from bright sunlight. It is quite bright today too but very cold and the wind makes it feel even colder.

Mexico Floods

Hundreds of thousands of people have fled severe floods in the south Mexican state of Tabasco where rivers burst their banks after heavy rain. The center of the state capital, is under between 6 and 18 feet of water with only rooftops visible from the air. Some 300,000 are still trapped in their homes in Tabasco, waiting to be rescued by boat or helicopter. Overall, the floods have claimed at least five lives in southern Mexico.

Bomb Scare at US Nuclear Facility

After a suspicious device was found in the lorry of a worker, the largest nuclear power plant in the US has been put in "lockdown". This incident happened at the Palo Verde site in Wintersburg, about 30 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona. The contract worker has been detained and is being questioned. A capped pipe with an unusual residue was found but the plant is on the lowest level of alert and operating normally.

Mexico Head Pledges Diaster Aid

Rescue workers are trying to help thousands of people trapped in their homes by the floodwaters. Some 70% of the state is under water in the worst floods for 50 years. On Friday the floodwaters were still rising and more rain was forecast for the weekend. The Mexican President has pledged the full support of his government to help more than a million people hit b those floods in Tabasco state. The are using helicopters and boats to move people stranded on their rooftops or pockets of high land.

US Economy Sees Surprise Growth

I heard today that the Feds dropped the interest rate a quarter of a percent in hopes of stopping the foreclosures of homes. People will be able to get home loans for less and hopefully, more of them will go out and get home loans. The economy grew, however, at its fastest rate in 1 1/2 years this summer. The US economy grew at an annualized rate of 3.9% between July and September in spite of the housing market downturn and the global credit squeeze. This is good news.

Baby is Coming

We got an email that our grandaughter went to the hospital early this morning about 3 am and she was in labor. She was supposed to be started today if she didn't have the baby on her own. So now we are waiting anxiously for the call that the baby is here. Unlike most people today, they don't know what they are having so it will be a happy surprise also to learn if it is a little girl or boy. We haven't heard anything yet on our grandaughter-in-law but she is overdue too so who knows, maybe today too????
