Blizzards in China

Crowds of frantic Chinese fought for seats Wednesday on the few trains leaving southern China, where the worst winter storms in half a century have crippled the nation's transport system during its busiest travel season. One desperate mob stormed a city bus in the main southern city of Guangzhou, mistakenly thinking it was taking passengers to the day's last departing trains. They pried open doors and elbowed their way inside as helpless police yelled that it was not going to the station. Hundreds of thousands of stranded Chinese want to get home for next week's Lunar New Year, a holiday that is as important in China as Christmas is in the West.

Super Bowl XXLII

Are you ready? Got all the friends and family invited in? Got all that food packed in and drinks? The Patriots are the favorites, at least around here. 23-17, Just 17 points for the potent Patriots. A certain MVP quarterback thinks that's a Super-sized diss. Tom Brady scoffed when told yesterday that New York Giants receiver, Plaxico Burress guaranteed New York will beat Brad's undefeated New England team in Sunday's Super bowl. We're only going to score 17 points said Brady before chuckling about it.He said, OK. Is Plax playing defense? I wish he had said 45-42 and given us a little credit for scoring more points. It will be a fun game to watch no matter what.

The biggest day is Saturday, when more than 150,000 revelers are expected to attend. Some even watch the golf. Total attendance has topped a half million each of the past four years.

Holly's Bedtime

It is Holly's bedtime and since I am still working, she will come in and stand beside my chair and talk to me in her little dog language. Sometimes it takes awhile for me to catch on to what she wants but then I looked at the clock and it was bedtime. She knows. She will sometimes want to go to bed a half an hour early but I make her wait. She is all cuddled up in her comforter now and fast asleep until about 6:30 tomorrow morning. Sometimes she sleeps in but rarely. She is so much fun. She is the best dog we have ever had. She is a medium size (19 lbs) Boston Terrier.

Computer Chairs

The next thing on my list of things to get is a new computer chair. I have tried both a regular computer chair and a chair from our table and neither is comfortable for very long. When you spend hours at the computer, you ought to be comfortable so I am going to start looking around and trying some out and see what I can find. I've been looking on the Internet but I think you have to go somewhere they have them and sit in them awhile and get the real feel of them before you buy one. Pfizer Beats Earnings Expectations for Quarter

Pfizer Inc., the world's largest drug maker, beat Wall Street earnings expectations for the fourth quarter, raised its 2008 revenue outlook and said it is on track to rebuild its product pipeline. The upbeat outlook offered Wednesday came as the company continues with a restructuring plan that cut 11,000 jobs and closed eight facilities in 2007.Meanwhile, its blockbuster cholesterol drug Lipitor is edging closer to patent expiration in 2010. The plan includes building the pipeline through internal development and outside deals while making the company's units more flexible and accountable. My husband and our neighbor had to quit taking Lipitor because it caused such muscle aches, she could hardly walk and he hurt so bad he couldn't stand it. Luckily it doesn't affect everyone the same. His brother takes Lipitor and does fine with it.

Carlos O'Kellys or Applebees?

Carlos O'Kellys or Applebees, that is the question? Which place do we go to this weekend? Since we missed our Mexican night tonight, I think we will go to Carlos O'Kellys Friday night. They aren't having a fish fry because the people who run it are going to Hawaii. Lucky them - getting away from all this snow and cold. We love Carlos O'Kellys Mexican food. I guess you would call it more American style and that is the way we like it. It is always good. We have never had a complaint and always brought home some wonderful leftovers for a lunch the next day.

Medtronics Recall

A lawsuit has been filed against Medtronics on behalf of a man who suffered undue pain and suffering due to the failure of implanted leads of a defibrillator. The poor guy had to have 19 unnecessary shocks to his heart and then it didn't work. He got another implant and it was faulty too. The whole recall can be found on the Internet at Medtronic recall. From the sounds of it, the man is lucky to be alive after having had to have several replacement leads and implants, trips to emergency and more. It is quite a story. His law firm, that is defending him is Mark & Associates, P.C. They have defended a great many people who have been injured by defective products. I believe they would be good ones to call upon if you ran into a bad situation such as this man did.

Pizza Night Called Off

Well we called off our Pizza Ranch night as it was below zero and blowing snow and blizzard conditions. We settled into the warm house with hamburgers and watched TV while the wind whistled all around us. One thing about it, we found the more snow that blew in around the house, the warmer it stayed so I think we saved a little on heat. We keep the humidifier running and it really goes through the water in this weather. My husband had to go out and shovel snow away from the dryer vent though today as it was completely covering it.

Blizzard Here

We are having a real blizzard here. They just sent the kids home from school. I can't see across the drive way hardly. The winds are gusting 45 mph and it is down right nasty out. I feel sorry for anyone who is out in this. It is good to be home in a warm home. Snow is flying everywhere and the rain we got last night has frozen on the roads and everything is slick. There will be lots of cars in the ditches today and tonight. People just aren't smart enough to stay at home on days like this.

Crude Oil Prices Inching Back Up Again

Crude oil prices inched up Friday after three days of losses as investors struggled with concerns about the economy but held on to hopes that President Bush's stimulus plan will work. Investors were keeping a close eye on the stock market, which also bounced between gains and losses. They wonder whether Bush's plan, which includes $145 billion worth of proposed tax relief, is enough to stave off a severe economic downturn. When we came home tonight, we noticed the gas in our little town had dropped 15 cents a gallon. That was a shock! With crude oil prices going back up though, I bet we will see it rise again. It seems they raise it before it ever really reached our area. We feel like they just raise the gas prices according to the news.

Israel Agrees to Ease Blockade on Gaza

Monday, Israel agreed to diesel fuel and medicine for Gaza on a one-time basis, easing the blockade imposed because of a surge in Palestinian rocket attacks on southern Israel. The shift came after the Israeli prime minister said Gaza's residents can just walk without gas for their cars. Israel and Gaza's Hamas government were locked in a public relations battle over the depth of the hardship. The U.N. warned that international food aid could be suspended by the end of the week. An angry Hamas TV announcer was heard shouting that they were being killed and starving and Palestinian leaders issued emotional pleas for national unity, while Israel accused Hamas of fabricating a crisis to gain world sympathy.

A huge blaze started in an empty downtown nightclub early Monday in Lawrence, Mass., and spread quickly through 16 buildings, destroying homes and businesses and forcing residents to flee in their pajamas into the bitter night. One person suffered minor injuries. I am surprised that is all that were hurt. An ambulance crew on an unrelated call spotted the fire about 2:30 a.m. The fire started in a nightclub that was being renovated and spread quickly on a stiff wind through the block that included early 1900s wood-framed buildings. Sean Penn Calls San Francisco Chronicle "Lamebrain"

Sean Penn's days of writing for the San Francisco Chronicle may be over as the actor now calls the publication an increasingly lamebrain newspaper. He offered the critique in a letter published Tuesday, written in response to a tongue-in-cheek article that focused on celebrity interest in Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. When the paper listed a number of potential matchups between celebrities and dictators or other authoritarian figures, Penn objected to the characterization. He said Chavez is a democratically elected leader.

A bitterly cold winter storm pummeled parts of Europe, killing at least three sailors when a ship sank in rough seas, and piling up snow that stranded thousands at airports, on mountain roads and in remote villages. The authorities in northeastern Bulgaria declared a state of emergency and called in the army to help civil defense officials clear roads and reach stranded motorists. A cold spell also caused problems in neighboring Romania, where Bucharest's two main airports were closed. Parts of Turkey and Greece, as well as Western Europe, were also affected.

Britney Spear's parents reportedly feel that Dr. Phil is a heartless, self-serving leech who is using Brittany's suffering for his own gain. They apparently came to this conclusion as Dr. Phil told his audience he will soon do a show around Britney. He had visited her in a hospital and the Spears family's representative, Lou Taylor blasted Dr. Phil on the "Today" show saying at no time had the Spears family agreed to do such a show. Taylor is angry that Dr. Phil, who visited Britney at the family's request, made public statements about the private affair.

Wall Street ended a painful year with another steep loss as investors glumly anticipated that 2008 would bring more of the uncertainty and turbulence of 2007. The Dow Jones industrials fell 101 points. The index posted its worst fourth quarter drop in 20 years, amid billion dollar losses at the world's biggest financial companies and falling spending by consumers whose budgets have been crimped by record high oil prices and declining home prices. Hopefully 2008 will be better.

Venezuela Changes Currency

Venezuela is launching a currency with the new year, cutting off three zeros from denominations in a bid to simplify finances and boost confidence in a money that has been losing value due to high inflation. President Hugo Chavez's government says the strong bolivar will make daily transactions easier and cure some accounting headaches. Officials also said it is part of a broader effort to contain rising prices and strengthen the economy. Prices have risen as Chavez has pumped increased amounts of the country's oil income into social programs, reinforcing his support among the poor and helping to drive 8.4 percent economic growth in 2007.

Global Warming Thawing Arctic

There is more to the idea that man-made global warming, alone, is causing the Arctic to melt. It is more alarming to learn there is a natural cause too that may account for much of the recent Arctic melting. There is a cyclical increase in the amount of energy in the atmosphere that moves from south to north around the Arctic Circle. This energy transfer, which comes from storms that head north because of ocean currents, is not acting alone according to scientists who have been studying this. They think it is a combination of this energy transfer increase and man-made global warming that serves like a one-two punch that is pushing the Arctic over the edge. These scientists are trying to figure out why the Arctic is melting faster than computer models predicted. The summer of 2007, like the summer of 2005, smashed all records for loss of summer sea ice in the Arctic Ocean and ice sheet in Greenland.

Warner Music Allows Amazon.com to Sell songs

Warner Music Group has been a major holdout on selling music online without copy protection. But they have given in to the growing trend and agreed to sell its tunes on Amazon.com Inc's digital music store. Until now, they have resisted offering songs by its artists in the MP3 format, which can be copied to multiple computers and burned onto CD's without restriction and played on most PCs and digital media players, including Apple Inc's iPod and Microsoft Corps.'s Zune.Warner Music's entire catalog, including work by artists Led Zeppelin, Aretha Franklin and Sean Paul, will be added to the site throughout the week.

Rose Parade and Rose Bowl

Today is the big Rose Bowl Parade and it is always a beauty. I don't know how they manage to make all those floats out of rose petals and other seeds, etc. It is quite a job but they do a beautiful job of it. They were afraid the Santa Ana winds would hurt the parade but it didn't seem to, which was a very good thing. It is always so enjoyable to watch. We lived there 9 years and never went to see it in person. One of those regrets you have that you can't change.
