Explosion at Market in India Kills Six

There was an explosion at a roadwide pig market in India's northeast and it killed six people and injured 40. They said the blast occurred Sunday afternoon in Kumarikata in the state of Assam near the Bhutan border. About 20 of the victims were injured critically.

This is under investigation and they will not speculate as to who was behind it. However, militant separatists have set off bombs in the region in the past. Several rebel groups are fighting for autonomy or independence in India's northeast.

The militants say India's national government exploits the region's rich natural resources but does little for the area's indigenous people. Most of the people are ethnically closer to people in Myanmar and China than the rest of India.

Trains

It seems everywhere we have moved, we have been close to a train. They go through quite often and really blow those whistles. They say your brain becomes accustomed to hearing them at night and sort of shuts that off and after while you don't hear them when you are asleep. That is very true. They also say people who live near trains, move quite often. I think that could be true too as we have moved at least 23 times in our lifetimes and always had a train nearby somewhere. A train just went through and it is quite close and must have had a very heavy load because even my computer shook. I just never want to be near one when it derails. One derailed several miles east of us and spilled harvested beans and that was the worst smell along that highway for a long time as they rotted in the ditches. They tried to cover them with something that did help some but not entirely. I'm glad I didn't live close to that.

Thunderheads

Those huge big thunderheads came up fast tonight. We left for the next town to go to supper. It didn't take long for them to overtake us but they split and went in opposite directions. We could see it pouring rain in the north and later in the south. They definitely don't need anymore in the south where all the flooding is and was. All we got was a sprinkle but we got nearly half an inch last night so that is plenty for now.

T.G.I.F.

Tomorrow is Friday - TGIF. If it doesn't thunderstorm again, we will go to the fish fry. My husband and his brother have a lot of things to talk over. They both had their PSA tests done in the past week with very different results. For all the worrying his brother did, he got an excellent report of 1.1. You just can hardly beat that. We will eat a lot of good food and talk about the 4th of July too and make plans.

Thunderstorms

They have been threatening us all day with severe weather. We were under a thunderstorm watch for hours. However, nothing happened. We are thankful for that. Rose

Rose is my good friend. She is 90 years young. She just got out of the hospital today and is very frail and weak. But she came to her beauty shop to have her hair done. It looked really nice. I hadn't seen her in over a month and she was so glad to see me. We had a nice visit while she had her hair drying under the dryer. She had radiation treatments on her head because she had cancer in a tonsil. They got all the cancer and she had a scan that showed she is cancer free. Isn't that wonderful?

South Korea Lifts Ban on U.S. Beef Imports

Officials said that South Korea had lifted an import ban on American beef today. They were hoping to move on from a crisis that battered the Pro-U.S. government with protests over mad cow disease concerns. The United States and South Korea agreed last week to restrict U.S. beef imports to younger cattle. This modifies an earlier deal that placed few restrictions on meat shipments and sparked widespread outrage against the government. Meat from cattle younger than 30 months is considered at less risk of mad cow disease. U. S. beef has been banned from South Korea since 2003.

Gunman Kills 5, then Himself in Plant

A 25 year old press operaator shot and killed five co-workers and himself at a plastics plant in rural western Kentucky. This happened just hours after arguing with his supervisor about not wearing safety goggles and using his cell phone while on the assembly line, according to police. He was so riled by the argument that he called his girlfriend and told her that he wanted to kill his boss. The girlfriend didn't warn anyone and I can't imagine why not. For just two hours later, he argued with another co-worker then shot and killed his supervisor as they walked outside. Then, he returned and shot at co-workers in a break room and on the plant floor and then killed himself. You just don't know these days who is going to off the deep end and kill people for little or no reason.

Since we moved to our new home, we have had so many complaints from visitors that it is so dark b the entry door by our garage. Canadians Argue for Polar Bear Hunt

Monday, officials from northern Canada were in Washington. They wanted to make an unpopular argument. That was to let U.S. hunters continue to kill polar bears for sport. The politicians from Canada's Northwest Territory asked Interior Department officials to allow U. S. sportsmen to still bring back polar bear hides after their hunts in Canada's Arctic region. This was despite the increased protection now afford the bear under the Endangered Species Act. The United States presently bans sport hunting of polar bears but Canada does not. Because of the recent decision to declare the polar bear threatened under the Endangered Species Act, also means U.S. sportsmen may no longer bring home trophy skins - which is what hunting's high-rollers actually prize.

Colorado Cousins

Cousins came today from Colorado. My 89 year old cousin fell Friday and just tripped over her own feet. Fell and scraped up her whole face, split her lip and broke her nose. The Power Team

Steve Carrier from the Power Team was in church tonight. It was terrific. He rolled up 3 frying pans like buritos. He bent steel poles with his teeth into the shape of a fish. He broke solid wood baseball bats. He broke a stack of 9 cement pieces with his elbow. He also barehanded bent a horseshoe into an "s" shape. He lifted two girls up by one of those pieces of metal above his head and spun them around. It was really something. Alot of people went forward and gave their hearts to the Lord and now they know they will be in Heaven one day when they die. Alot of people think they will do that when they get old but there are no guarantees you will get old. He told us the Strongest Man in the World was killed in a car accident that hit him broadside and broke his neck. They have not told that publicly. They want to keep it quiet for some reason. But he had no idea he was going to die that day. A 50 year old man in our town fell and died last week and when he went to work that morning he had no idea he would be in eternity before lunch. You aren't even guaranteed your next breath so you need to be sure where you will spend eternity because life goes so fast, it is just like a vapor. Just because you go to church, doesn't mean you are going to Heaven. If you were sprinkled as a baby, that means nothing either. And if your Folks are Christians, that isn't going to get you into Heaven either. You and you alone are the one who makes that final decision as to whether you are going to spend eternity in Heaven or Hell. Thursday, oil prices dropped sharply. This was because China said it wil raise fuel prices. This move could dampen the booming Asian nations's oil consumption. Prices also were iven a downward push by the Iraqi Oil Ministry's announcement that it is close to signing oil serice deals with several major Western oil companies in an effort to boost its crude output. We noticed gas had dropped 7 cents a gallon tonight. This was the first drop in price in a long time.

Researchers are studying what they think are people's closest genetic relatives, the chimp. They found that when chimps are victims of aggression, that if a third chimp steps in to offer consolation, their stress is reduced. Usually that consolation took the form of a kiss or embrace. Taliban Steps Up Campaign

Just outside Afghanistan's second largest city Monday, hundreds of Taliban fighters invaded villages, forcing NATO and Afghan troops to rush in while frightened residents fled. On the outskirts of Kandahar, the Taliban assault is the latest display of prowess by the militants, despite a record number of U.S. and NATO troops in the country. The push into the Arghandab district, a lush region filled with grape and pomegranate groves that the Soviet army could never conquer, comes three days after a Taliban attack on Kandahar's prison that freed 400 insurgent fighters. NATO conceded Monday, that those fighters appear to be massing on the doorstep of the Taliban's former power base. The city of Kandahar lies only 10 miles to the southeast. The sophisticated and successful jailbreak, followed by the movement into Arghandab, is the latest evidence of the Taliban's growing strength. NATO and the U.S. have pleaded for more troops in the last year and now have 65,000 in the country. But the militants are still finding successes the international alliance can't counter.

Our Town

Our town has suffered the worst flooding disaster ever. The water has backed up in all the basements along with sewage. The sewage plant is old and apparently not able to handle it all. Much grass, etc gets into the drains in the streets too and often plugs them up. Water was way up to the doors of the grocery store. Fortunately for everyone, only a couple inches of water got inside and the floors could be cleaned and sanitized and store reopened in about a day and a half.

Flooding

Iowa has been hit by massive flooding. Several of the largest cities have been inundated by high water. Many levees have given way. Many roads are washed away. Many roads are still covered with water. It is dangerous to drive at night as you might not know where it is flooded. I just heard of the 4th death caused by drowning in flood waters. Many homes destroyed. It is so sad.

Tim Russert Dies at 58

Missing from his chair on "Meet the Press" was Tim Russert. He had died of a heart attack at age 58 just a few days ago. He hosted that program for more than 16 years. He was well-know by all and will be missed by many. He had a checkup but they found he had an enlarged heart. It goes to show you that stress tests don't always tell the whole story about your body. Crock Pot Roast

It is Father's Day and I have a lovely roast cooking in the crockpot. The whole house smells wonderful. I will add onions, potatoes and carrots a bit later. It will be a great supper with delicious gravy. A lettuce salad to go with it and it is an easy supper with few dishes. Then dish up some sweet sliced peaches for dessert and we've got it made. Can't wait.

Fish Fry Night

It is fish fry night and we are going to a different one tonight. The one we usually go to has water problems due to flooding. They always have a good one too. But it will be nice for a change to go somewhere else. They have a wonderful salad bar there and we haven't been there for awhile so it will be a treat. We are looking forward to it. It is a beautiful sunny day in the 70's with a great breeze.

Lawn mowing this time of year has become a very real challenge. It rains almost every day so the grass is wet. It plugs up under your mower. It leaves windrows on the lawn which looks awful. By the time you can get to mow it because it is dry, it is so tall, we joke about making hay out of it. My husband was just lucky enough to get one sunny part of a day to get our lawn mowed and it looks very nice. He started all the neighbors mowing theirs too. :0)

Wisconsin Dells

Did you see on the news yesterday about the flooding in the Wisconsin Dells. It was just horrifying to watch houses break in half and go downstream. Also more houses just slid down the bank and went down the river. They said they lost 150 riverside homes. The people are devastated. Most of them were very expensive summer homes. At least they have they regular home to go back to but what a loss and totally unexpected.

Golf Course

We had 4 1/2 inches of rain yesterday. We had another 1 1/2 inches today. Our golf course is just one huge lake of water. We have never seen anything like it. Levees are breaking in nearby towns and they are having to evacuate people. They can't drink the water because the water plant isn't working. I wonder what they are doing with the people in nursing homes and the hospital. All restaurants are closed there. Other towns are closed to traffic and campgrounds in a town farther out is under water, trailers, vehicles and all. I saw a deer being swept downstream. Poor thing. What a sight.

NBA Playoffs - Lakers vs Celtics

The Celtics beat the Lakers again 98 to 88 in Game 1. Paul Pierce, who used to sneak into Lakers games as a kid, came bounding out of the tunnel from the locker room after leaving with an injured knee. He led he Celtics to a tense victory of the Lakers in Game 1 of these tradition-soaked finals. An excited crowd of more than 18,000 screaming fans watched as Pierce made two 3-pointers in just 22 seconds to give the Celtics a 75-71 lead. What an exciting game. My son, the Lakers fan, had to be disappointed though.

Severe Weather

Why is it everytime it rains this year, we get severe weather. Several towns SE of us have been blown right off the map. They have been totally demolished by tornadoes. And today is another of those days. Severe weather warnings for half the southern part of the state. It thundered half the night here and we got 1/4" of rain again. Fields are flooded. The new corn is drowning. It isn't good at all.

NASCAR at Dover

Kyle Busch revels in his role as NASCAR's villain. As the top driver, he enjoys his role so much more. He was simpleysensational again. He dominated the second half of the 400 mile race Sunday at Dover International Speedway and racing to his Spring Cup series best fourth win of the season. He has a total of 10 victories this season. He won for the third time in the last five Cup races. But watch the Joe Gibbs Racing driver. Although he didn't find himself in Victory Lane he's pretty close. Kyle Busch earned his fifth straight top three finish and has not finished outside the top 10 in any of the last seven races.

Sex and the City

The movie "Sex and the City" made it big at the boxoffice this weekend. They made $55.7 million. That just shows that Sarah Jessica Parker and her gal pals have not lost their sex appeal. This weekend "women Power" was outstanding. Some called it a "Chick Flick" but it appears men and women both went to see it. They had forecasted it to take in about half that amount so I am sure they are really happy with the movie.

Can you believe it is June already. The weather has been at least a month behind. It is quite normal to have nights in the 40's and that is too cold. Now suddenly it is summer. Have to turn off the furnace and turn on the air conditioner. So much for saving any energy or chance of lowering the light/gas bill. We kept the windows open as long as we could but enough was enough. When it gets 85 in our house, we need air and the wind has almost quit altogether now that we need it.
