I went over to my daughter's the other night for home cooking. She made a delicious salad, garlic bread and the best chicken marinara. I got to bring home enough for a couple of meals. I will enjoy it for lunch today too. It is a beautiful sunny day here. We have had cooler days and no rain so things are drying out. I feel so sorry for those who have terrible flooding in their homes. North Minnesota is really bad. The Mississippi is really high.

Drought is Over

Not only is the drought over in our State but it can't seem to quit raining.  It rains nearly every day.  There has even been water across the main Interstate causing traffic to detour.  Bridges have been washed out or collapsed and gravel roads are in poor condition in many places.  So many homes have been flooded.  Rivers are out of their banks in so many places.  We were so happy to see the rain after 2 years of drought but enough is enough now.

Mississippi River

Last week we went with relatives to McGregor and Guttenberg on the Iowa side of the Mississippi River. The River has been in flood stage for weeks and was still 4 feet above flood stage after the 3 days we were there. My sister-in-law wanted to ride the ferry across the river in the worst way but the currents and whirlpools were really bad and the ferry couldn't run. It would have been too dangerous if it had run. But we had a motel where we could sit outside, right along side the Mississippi and watch barges trying to go south. They couldn't go north because many islands were covered and there were all kind of sand bars that they were getting hung up on even south of Lock #10.

Wisconsin Dells

Did you see on the news yesterday about the flooding in the Wisconsin Dells. It was just horrifying to watch houses break in half and go downstream. Also more houses just slid down the bank and went down the river. They said they lost 150 riverside homes. The people are devastated. Most of them were very expensive summer homes. At least they have they regular home to go back to but what a loss and totally unexpected.

Volunteers Hold Back Levee 'Sand Boils'

Have you seen the flooding on television in Missouri and Arkansas? It is just hard to fathom what we would do if we found ourselves in the same situation that those poor people are facing. Volunteers armed with sandbags held back water springing up from under a rural levee last Tuesday as the White river continued its highest surge in 25 years through eastern Arkansas. The National Weather Service had issued a flash flood warning during that morning for rural Prairie County north of Interstate 40 after spotters noticed the levee had "sand boils". That is water passing under the earthen barrier and appearing on the side like a muddy spring. B the afternoon, 100 volunteers held back the flow by building sandbag barriers for the water to be held in, creating pressure to stem the tide.Thank the Lord for good people coming to the rescue.

Mexico Head Pledges Diaster Aid

Rescue workers are trying to help thousands of people trapped in their homes by the floodwaters. Some 70% of the state is under water in the worst floods for 50 years. On Friday the floodwaters were still rising and more rain was forecast for the weekend. The Mexican President has pledged the full support of his government to help more than a million people hit b those floods in Tabasco state. The are using helicopters and boats to move people stranded on their rooftops or pockets of high land.

Midwest Awash After Heavy Storms

Storms have continued to drench the Midwest which is already enduring record floods that are reported to have killed at least 25 people. Meanwhile, a heatwave in southeastern states is also setting records and has been blamed for a similar death toll. States from Iowa to Texas have all been deluged, some suffering the aftermath of Tropical Storm Erin, followed by other heavy storm systems. More heavy rain is forecase in Illinois, prompting flood warnings.

South Asia n Millions Face Flood Hunger

Millions of people across South Asia are still facing hunger after some of the worst floods in decades. Anger is rising over aid efforts. The floods have killed 360 and affected 20,000 in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. In Bihar, at least six people have died when a boat capsized, but dozens more are feared to have drowned. Water levels have lowered in Bangladesh and Nepal but there are rising concerns of waterborne disease.
