Bush Supports Croatia for NATO
President Bush says he strongly supports Croatian membership in NATO. However, he has declined to say if the former Yugoslav country will be invited to join the alliance at a summit next week. President Bush said the decision will be made by all NATO members. He said this at an interview with the state-run Croatian television broadcast Thursday. He also said that Croatia is in a very good position to be invited to join. Membership in NATO and European Union are among the country's priorities. There is a lot going on in the world today and I don't always understand all of it. However, it is important for all countries to try and get along together.
Last Will and Testament
Have you had your Last Will and Testament drawn up yet? You know most younger people don't think about it or don't want to think about it. However, there is no time like the present to do this. Young people think they will live forever, but when you get up in the morning you don't know whether you will be alive by the end of the day. We are only promised our next breath and no more. And do you know where you are going when you die? If you don't, then now is a good time to make that decision. The only way to Heaven is by the way of Jesus Christ. You only need to ask him to forgive your sins, come into your heart and you are on your way to Heaven. And you will know it is so, if you do this. He suffered a horrible death for us in order that we might have a wonderful home in Heaven one day when we die.

New Prehistoric Sea Crocodile Discovered
I just love anything prehistoric so an article caught my eye that said that scientists claim to have discovered a new prehistoric sea crocodile in Brazil. The pointy nosed crocodiles may have joined sharks as the dominant predators in the world's oceans some 62 million years ago. The Brazilian scientists unveiled one of the most complete skeletons found yet of the prehistoric animals. This sheds new light on the evolutionary history of modern crocodiles. The fossil includes a skull, jaw bone and vertebrae, making it one of the most complete examples of marine crocodylomorphs collected so far in South America. It is a very rare find and it gives rise to several new theories. It is very interesting.

Volunteers Hold Back Levee 'Sand Boils'
Have you seen the flooding on television in Missouri and Arkansas? It is just hard to fathom what we would do if we found ourselves in the same situation that those poor people are facing. Volunteers armed with sandbags held back water springing up from under a rural levee last Tuesday as the White river continued its highest surge in 25 years through eastern Arkansas. The National Weather Service had issued a flash flood warning during that morning for rural Prairie County north of Interstate 40 after spotters noticed the levee had "sand boils". That is water passing under the earthen barrier and appearing on the side like a muddy spring. B the afternoon, 100 volunteers held back the flow by building sandbag barriers for the water to be held in, creating pressure to stem the tide.Thank the Lord for good people coming to the rescue.

Birds and Spring
The birds are finally returning and it is so nice to hear them singing again. There are dozens of Robins hopping all over. The big Lab dog next door loves having all the snow gone out of his yard. The kids had him out running around the yard outside the fence and he minds very well and doesn't go anywhere unless they tell him it is ok. He came running right up to us when we got home as we always pet him all we can. He's such a lovable dog. We used to have two like him on the farm.

Lunch and Living
We went to lunch today with a dear friend I used to work with. We celebrated her 56th birthday a couple days late. But we had a great lunch and wonderful homemade pie you just can't beat. It was a beautiful day although very very windy. The frost must be out of the ground as the huge ponds of water have gone down in the fields and wind is helping to dry out everything. We still have some big piles of snow that have turned to ice and will take a little longer to get rid of but it is still March. Looks like March will come in like a lamb. Sure hope so.

Easter Sunday
Sunday is Easter, the day we celebrate Jesus rising from the grave to Heaven so that if we believe in him, we too can be in that beautiful place called Heaven. The Bible says eyes have not seen nor ears heard what is in store for us in Heaven waiting for us. It is more beautiful than any artist could paint or any person could imagine. Where we won't have all these aches and pains, no tears or sorrows and every day will be a beautiful day full of the light of Jesus. No dark dreary days and nights anymore either. We will get to see some of our kids, grandkids and a little sweet great granddaughter on Sunday and have a wonderful dinner. What more could you ask for?

St. Patrick's Day
Did you realize if you are half Irish, like I am, you don't have to wear Green on St. Patrick's Day? At work, we always went out of our way to decorate the office and wear as much green as possible. It is a lot of fun. They always say if you don't wear green, they get to pinch you. Nobody wanted to be pinched so everyone tried their best to remember to wear green. My old relatives came from Tipperary, Ireland and they say they still have an old castle over there. One of my nieces says she went and looked it up and it was in quite bad shape, of course, but I think it would be fun to go there and see it.

Stocks Retreat On Credit Fears
Wall Street plunged again Friday after a near meltdown at Bear Stearns Cos. handed investors the unwelcome confirmation that the credit market's troubles are far from over. I wasn't too surprised to hear that, were you? Word that the investment bank needed rescuing touched off a wave of selling that left each of the major indexes down more than 1.5 percent on the day. The Dow Jones industrial average fell nearly 200 points. It seems to me that everything I have been hearing on the news lately is that everyone wants the government to bail out the banks, people losing their homes, etc. Have they forgotten that the government is the hard working taxpayers? I think they have, and the "government" has become an entity in itself, almost a living being. But then, actually it is - millions of taxpayers paying into it or the "government" wouldn't have a dime to do anything with. I think they need to be much more accountable as to where and which directions they are throwing our money. How about you?

GM Recalls 200,000 Sedans Over Fire Risk
This is really scary as the problem has caused 267 vehicle fires and six injuries. It also caused 17 fires in structures so General Motors Corp is recalling 207,542 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix sedans over the risk they could catch fire. They warned their owners not to park the cars in garages until they are fixed. GM said Friday it is recalling the l997-2003 Buick Regal GS and Grand Prix GTP models with 3.8 liter supercharged V-6 engines. What could happen is that during hard braking, drops of oil can leak from the engine onto the exhaust manifold and fires can start if the oil gets hot enough. So if you have one and haven't heard from them, it would be a very good idea to get your car into the garage as quick as you can.

Robots, Pets Equally Decrease Loneliness
Dogs may have a hard time wrapping their paws around this one: Robotic competition is nipping at their heels in the man's best friend department. Can you believe that many people are enjoying the company of a robotic dog rather than a living dog. I know that they have found taking dogs into nursing homes has relieved the loneliness of residents so I guess having robotic dogs could be entertaining and fun for them also. I know I would rather have my little Boston Terrier, Holly, as a companion than a robotic dog, but to each his own, as they say.

Boeing Protests Tanker Decision to GAO
Boeing Co. on Tuesday filed a formal protest of a $35 billion Air Force tanker contract, saying the "seriously flawed" selection was "replete with irregularities" and resulted in the "wrong airplane for the warfighter." The comments came as Boeing filed a protest with the Government Accountability Office over the Air Force decision to award the high-stakes deal to European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co and Northrop Grumman Corp. The Chicago-based company has been suppling aerial refueling tankers to the Air Force for nearly 50 years. This doesn't sound good. Why is American doing more business all the time with other countries rather than those here in the United States. Is it any wonder they drive U.S. companies out of the country? I can't blame Boeing. They have always been a fine company and builder of many great planes.

Gas Prices Rise to New National Record
With gas at $109 a barrel the last time I heard, it is no wonder our gas prices are rising. I don't know how the semi drivers can continue to haul everything with the price of Diesel. I have heard a lot of them are quitting because they can't afford the gas. Groceries are going up in the store by leaps and bounds. Milk is now higher than a gallon of gas. that is a first. What would you feel like if you had the money, but there were no groceries in the store to buy at any price? Could it happen? I think it could but I sure hope it doesn't. They say the national average for gas if $3.2272 a gallon and ours in town is $3.099 so I guess we are lucky??
Organic Gardening - No Weeds
I have tried and tried to keep the weeds out of my garden with some success but not completely. This online website EvoOrganic's new Weed Free Garden Watering Blanket has the neatest Weed Free Garden Blanket. I wish I had known about it when I was on the farm and had a huge garden. It is environmentally good because it saves about 80% of the water you would normally use to keep your garden watered. And organic food is what everyone is looking for today. We want our food grown without chemicals and other fertilizers and this is the answer. I have used a well-known product for years, sprinkled on my garden to hold down the weeds but I am sure it contains chemicals that are probably not the best thing for us. Check into this website for a most interesting answer to the problem of weeds and lots more information on organic gardening. And note the special offer of 50 free kits that will be given to 50 bloggers if they will follow the instructions and send a picture of their garden when it gets started. That is a great deal for all gardeners. Hurry, if you want to be one of those to get a free kit.

Los Angeles New Ordinance for Dog and Cat Owners
Some say there are more dogs and cats in the world than people and sometimes it seems that way. Well, Los Angeles has had to euthanize thousands of animals and in order to eventually eliminating the thousands of euthanizations done ever year, the Mayor of Los Angeles signed one of the nation's toughest laws on pet sterilization. It requires most dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered by the time they are 4 months old. It does exempt some animals, including those that have competed in shows or sporting competitions, guide dogs, animals used b police agencies and those belonging to professional breeders. But the average pet owner must have their dog or cat spayed or neutered by the time it reaches 4 months of age or as late as 6 months with a letter from the veterinarian. People with older unneutered pets and newcomers to the city with animals also have to obey the law.

Harvard Testing Women-only Gym Hours
I just heard that Harvard University has banned men from one of its gyms for a few hours a week. The reason is to accommodate Muslim women who for religious and cultural reasons cannot exercise comfortably in the presence of men. Not surprising is the fact that the policy is already unpopular with many on campus, and that includes some women who consider it sexist. One student wrote a column in The Harvard Crimson newspaper and was critical of the new hours. She said she thought it was incorrect in a college setting to institute a policy in which half of the campus gets wronged or denied a resource that is supposed to be for everyone. Another student, who is Muslim but not one of the women who requested the change, rejected this argument. She works out elsewhere on campus.

Venezuela Reopening Embassy
Venezuela is going to reopen its embassy in Colombia and let the Colombian diplomats back in that President Hugo Chavez expelled last week. That was caused by a crisis sparked by a cross-border Colombian attack on rebels in Ecuador. The government cited an easing of tensions at a summit in the Dominican Republic. It was there that President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa shook hands with Colombia's U.S. backed leader, Alvaro Uribe. This took place after a tense debate. The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry has decided to re-establish the normal functioning of its diplomatic relations with the government of the Republic of Colombia, calling it a victory for peace and sovereignty.

Train and Bus Crash Kills 18 in Argentina
This is a really sad situation. A train slammed into a bus at a rural Argentine rail crossing early Sunday, killing 18 people and leaving at least 47 others injured. The passenger bus was traveling from the Argentine capital to the South Atlantic beach resort of Mar del Plata when the accident happened near Dolores, some 125 miles south of Buenos Aires. Police said 18 people died and at least 47 had multiple injuries and ambulances rushed the victims to area hospitals as fast as they could. I wonder if the bus just didn't see the train or tried to beat it. That kills more people.
Democrat Wins ex-Speaker's Seat
Bo, it sure looks like the Democrats are going to take over this year, doesn't it? A long time Republican district fell to the Democrats Saturday, when a wealthy businessman and scientist snatched former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's congressional seat in a closely watched special election. Democrat Bill Foster won 53 percent of the vote compared to 47 percent for Republican Jim Oberweis. With all 568 precincts reporting, Foster had 52,010 votes to Oberweis' 46,988. Hastert who is 66, lost his powerful post as speaker when Democrats took control of Congress. He resigned late last year.

Good Weather
We are finally getting a taste of almost Springlike weather. After days and days of snow and snow overnight and below temperatures, it is getting up to 40 degrees. A lot of the snow is melting and there is so much the water is just like small lakes everywhere. I wish this could keep up but they say cooler tomorrow and some rain possibly mixed with snow. I hope it misses us and goes north.

Wall Street Stocks Manage Gains
Have you noticed that every day there is a big worry about people losing their homes? I guess everyone else is too because Wall Street managed a moderate gain in an erratic session Wednesday as investors sorted through a downbeat Federal reserve assessment of the economy. Investors remain nervous about how the fallout from the global credit crisis will hurt financial companies. Recent speculation that Citi-group Inc. might log significant write-downs from exposure to subprime mortgage related securities only increased those fears. We are fortunate in this area that housing sales are going fairly well, much building of new homes is going on and people have good jobs and as far as I know, no one is in danger of losing their home in this area. We are thankful for that.

American Idol Doesn't Menti on Contestant's Stripper Past
David Hernandez's stripper past didn't come back to haunt him on American Idol. Hernandez's three year stint as a male stripper wasn't even mentioned during the live telecast, which featured the 24 year old from Glendale, AZ, performing a rendition of Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now." Randy Jackson called Hernandez's singing "pitchy" but said he had a "big ol' voice." No one, the three judges, host Ryan Seacrest or other contestants, alluded to the news that Hernandez worked for three years in Phoenix at Dick's Cabaret. There, he would appear fully nude and perform lap dances for the club's "mostly male" clientele.

Owner of Slaughterhouse to be Subpeonaed
Members of the U.S. House oversight committee are expected to order the owner of the Southern California slaughterhouse involved in the largest beef recall in the nation's history to testify on Capitol Hill. Member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce's Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations were expected to vote today7 to subpoena Hallmark/Westland Meat Co. owner, Steve Mendell. Rep. John Dingell, Democrat from Michigan, said Monday that Mendell would be required to testify on March 12. Mendell was a no-show at a meeting of the subcommittee last week. Federal officials recalled 143 million pounds of beef last month after the Humane Society of the United States released undercover video that showed workers at the Chino slaughterhouse shoving sick and crippled cows with forklifts and stunning them with electric prods to get them to stand.

Allstate Settles With Gulf Coast Customers
Allstate Corp. will restore insurance coverage for hundreds of customers and pay $250,000 to resolve disputes over cancellation of south Louisiana homeowner policies after Hurricane Katrina, the company said on Wednesday. The company has clashed with state Insurance Commissioner, Jim Donelon, over two separate issues that resulted in several thousand policy cancellations at a time when rates had skyrocketed. Allstate said it has agreed to offer wind and hail policies to a "few hundred" customers whose coverage has been canceled, but only if their policies were in effect for at least three years on the same property.
Council Rules "Chemical Ali" Can be Executed
The Saddam Hussein henchman known as "Chemical Ali" for gassing thousands of Kurdish civilians is due to hang within the month, following the endorsement of his death sentence Friday by Iraq's presidential council. But even survivors were notably subdued about the news in a nation weary of violence and suffering. The agreement among Iraq's three-member presidential council - President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, along with the Sunni and Shiite vice presidents - eliminated the last barrier before Ali Hassan al-Majid can be executed.
