About 400 Pakistani tribal residents who were furious over a deadly suicide bombing at a mosque, laid siege to several Taliban strongholds in their troubled northwestern region. They killed 11 militants according to officials. The Taliban attack on the mosque left 33 worshippers dead and wounded dozens during Friday prayers. This angered residents of the Haya Gai area of Upper Dir district who have had tensions with local militants for months.

30 Die in Bombing at Funeral in Pakistan

What a sad happening! A suicide bomber blew himself up at a funeral for a slain Shiite leader in northwest Pakistan. Thirty people were killed and more than 60 were wounded. Three other people were killed sectarian rioting sparked by the attack. Although no one claimed responsibility, the blast bore the hallmarks of Sunni extremists blamed for a string of other bloody strikes against Pakistan's Shiite minority in recent months.

Al-Qaida Commander Killed Pakistan

A missile from a U.S.Predator drone struck a suspected terrorist safehouse in Pakistan and killed a top al-Qaida commander believed responsible for a brazen bomb attack during a visit last year by Vice President Cheney to Afghanistan. The strike that killed Abu Laith al-Libi was conducted Monday night or early last Tuesday. They would neither confirm nor deny that the U.S. carried it out. The attack was against a facility in Pakistan's north Waziristan region, the lawless tribal area bordering Afghanistan. An official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to discuss the strike publicly.

Bhutto Assinated in Pakistan Today

Former Prime Minister Bhutto was killed today by a sniper, shot several times in the neck and died at the hospital. She was at a rally being held before the election on January 8. They do not know who is behind it but they do know the country is notorious for not wanting a woman in power of any kind. She was educated in the United States and wanted so much to bring democracy to her country. She knew the dangers but took the chance anyway and now she is dead. What a shame.

Musharraf Appoints Army Successor

Pakistan's President, Pervez Musharraf has named his successor to take over as army chief, according to the military. The appointee is former head of intelligence Lt. Geb. Ashfaq Pervez Kiani. Gen. Musharraf will resign as head of the army if he wins presidential elections on Saturday. Opposition parties say his candidacy is illegal and that he has broken previous promises to resign as army chief. Lt. Gen. Kiani has been appointed deputy chief of army staff and will take over the top post when it falls vacant. It is not clear when that will be.

Suicide Bomb Kills 15 in Pakistan

A suicide bomber, wearing a woman's burka, has killed at least 15 people in an attack at a bus police checkpoint in northwest Pakistan. Four policemen were among the dead and at least 20 people were injured in the blast in the garrison town of Bannu. The bomb was detonated in a rickshaw, which had been stopped for inspection. It is the latest in a series of deadly attacks blamed on Islamist militants in the North Waziristan tribal region near the border with Afghanistan.

Violence in Pakistan Escalates

Militants in northwest Pakistan disavowed a peace pact with the government and launched two days of suicide attacked and bombings that killed at least 70 people, dramatically escalating the violence in the al-Qaida infiltration. The attacks followed strident calls by extremists to avenge the government's bloody storming of Islamabad's Red Mosque and a declaration of Jihad, or holy war, by at least one pro-Taliban cleric.
