The next time you have a case of diarrhea that lasts a day or more, chances are better than 1 in 3 that it was food poisoning. It is amazing to learn that as many as a quarter of Americans suffer a food borne illness each year. However, only a fraction of those cases get linked to high-profile outbreaks like the recent salmonella peanut scare.
Dr. Robert Tauze, from the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, is an expert on the subject of food poisoning. He says outbreaks are dramatic instances. But they do highlight a health threat that many people exaggerate and misunderstand according to some experts.
The U.S. food supply is still considered to be one of the safest in the world. I heard on the news the other night that it can take up to 3 days before something you ate can make you sick. You rarely get sick immediately.
