Mexico Floods

Hundreds of thousands of people have fled severe floods in the south Mexican state of Tabasco where rivers burst their banks after heavy rain. The center of the state capital, is under between 6 and 18 feet of water with only rooftops visible from the air. Some 300,000 are still trapped in their homes in Tabasco, waiting to be rescued by boat or helicopter. Overall, the floods have claimed at least five lives in southern Mexico.

Bomb Scare at US Nuclear Facility

After a suspicious device was found in the lorry of a worker, the largest nuclear power plant in the US has been put in "lockdown". This incident happened at the Palo Verde site in Wintersburg, about 30 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona. The contract worker has been detained and is being questioned. A capped pipe with an unusual residue was found but the plant is on the lowest level of alert and operating normally.

Mexico Head Pledges Diaster Aid

Rescue workers are trying to help thousands of people trapped in their homes by the floodwaters. Some 70% of the state is under water in the worst floods for 50 years. On Friday the floodwaters were still rising and more rain was forecast for the weekend. The Mexican President has pledged the full support of his government to help more than a million people hit b those floods in Tabasco state. The are using helicopters and boats to move people stranded on their rooftops or pockets of high land.

US Economy Sees Surprise Growth

I heard today that the Feds dropped the interest rate a quarter of a percent in hopes of stopping the foreclosures of homes. People will be able to get home loans for less and hopefully, more of them will go out and get home loans. The economy grew, however, at its fastest rate in 1 1/2 years this summer. The US economy grew at an annualized rate of 3.9% between July and September in spite of the housing market downturn and the global credit squeeze. This is good news.

Baby is Coming

We got an email that our grandaughter went to the hospital early this morning about 3 am and she was in labor. She was supposed to be started today if she didn't have the baby on her own. So now we are waiting anxiously for the call that the baby is here. Unlike most people today, they don't know what they are having so it will be a happy surprise also to learn if it is a little girl or boy. We haven't heard anything yet on our grandaughter-in-law but she is overdue too so who knows, maybe today too????
