Pope Benedict XVI

The Pope wrapped up his USA visit with Mass at Yankee Stadium. He told his massive U.S. flock to use its freedoms wisely. Pope Benedict beamed before a joyous crowd of 57,000. Hours before, he made a stop to pray a the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He called the Mass a summons to move forward with firm resolve to use wisely the blessings of freedom, in order to build a future of hope for future generations. He repeated a core message that faith must play a role in public life, citing the need to oppose abortion.

Pope Bebedict XVI Urges Iraqi Priests' Release

There were two clerics of the Syrian-Catholic diocese of Mosul kidnapped while attending a funeral on Saturday. Pope Benedict XVI has called for their release during his prayers on Sunday. Pope Benedict, speaking in Italian outside the Vatican, asked that they quickly let the two religious men go. He said the news from Iraq rattles the consciences of all those for whom the good of the country and peace in the region is held dear.

Pope Benedict XVI Refuses Meeting With Rice

Condoleeza Rice asked to talk with Pope Benedict XVI. However, her recent request was turned down. She wanted to discuss the Middle East and Iraq. The Pope refused a request for an audience during the August holidays. The Pope does not normally receive politicians on his annual holiday at the residence near Rome. But one leading Italian newspaper said it was an evident snub by the Vatican towards the Bush administration.
