Iraq Vows to Oust Kurdish Rebels
Turkey and Iraq have agreed to expend all efforts to oust a Kurdish separatist group from northern Iraq. A memorandum was signed of understanding on security issues after talks in Ankara. Ankara had warned Iraq to crack down on the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) within its borders or face a possible incursion by Turkish troops. Around 80 Turkish soldiers have died in skirmishes with the PKK this year.

Twin Brothers Gift To Aid Twins Festival
Twin brothers, once recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's most identical twins have left most of their estate to the festival in Twinsburg, about 15 miles south of Cleveland, Ohio. The land is expected to bring $4 to $5 million dollars to go to the "Twin Days" festival. They were two frugal farmers who always dressed alike, talked alike and enjoyed dating other twins. They won many identical twins contests over the years.
Oil Futures
Oil futures settled at a record high above $78 on expectations that crude inventories fell last week and reports of new violence in Nigeria. Nigeria is a large oil producer and key supplier to the U.S. Investors believe today's inventory report by the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration will show that refiners drew down oil inventories as they continued to increase gasoline production last week.

General Motors Corp.
General Motors Corporation ran its string of profitable quarters to three on Tuesday, July 31, when it announced second quarter net income of $891 million that came largely from overseas operations. The earnings growth in Europe, Latin America, Asia and other areas eclipsed lingering problems in North America. I hope they continue to make good products as they make good cars too.

Rupert Murdoch Buys The Wall Street Journal
Rupert Murdoch has bought the Wall Street Journal. I wonder what kind of difference that is going to make in the paper? He appeared to be on the verge of clinching a deal to buy Dow Jones & Co., reportedly lining up sufficient support to take over stewardship of The Wall Street Journal Publisher from the family that has controlled it for more than a century. And he finally got it. This could be quite a change, maybe.

Plans for Execution Proceed
A Georgia man is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on July 17 for killing a police officer in 1989. Although the case has withered in recent years as most of the key witnesses at his trial have recanted and in some cases said they lied under pressure from police, he will still be executed. I am in favor of the death penalty and a speedy trial and not dragging these things out for years and years and appeal after appeal.
